2017 Wish List

By Dr. Sue Kressly

As I look back on 2016 and the changes that have evolved in health care, pediatrics and health information technology, it’s no wonder many of us feel exhausted coming to work. However, with the New Year comes new opportunities, and together, I think we all have the opportunity to do great things for our patients. Here are some of my wish list items for 2017…

For my pediatric colleagues:
I wish you one moment each day where you feel the pure joy of being a pediatrician. It might come in the form of the look of relief from reassured, grateful parents, the professional satisfaction in knowing that you solved a diagnostic dilemma, or a chocolate covered hug from a toddler. It’s a great privilege to touch the lives of our collective future, and I hope that you find it as personally fulfilling as I do.

For my dedicated team members who work in Health IT:
I wish for you peace; the peace of mind in knowing that you are valued and appreciated. I know how hard you work every day trying to assist healthcare professionals so they can use technology effectively. Whether you are providing training, support, services, developing new technology, or just lending a receptive ear, you often are at the receiving end of much emotion. We can’t embark upon this journey to improve our HIT tools without you, and we often forget to say thanks. This is truly a journey, and we will continue to walk it together for the mutual benefit of all of us, but mostly for the patients we care for.

For our patients and families:
I wish you love. We live in stressful times where rapid change is a part of every aspect of our lives. Know that the health professionals with whom you share your most intimate thoughts, fears, and dreams care about you. Everyone deserves to feel loved and know that they matter. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives, and please let us know how we can most effectively help you.

For the world at large:
I wish you hope. Children may be only 25% of the population, but they are 100% of our future. Let’s invest in their future together so that we all see the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.
